Round and Round

I know my brain is not normal, and I’m OK with that.

Last week I went out to take care of my mushroom logs, and holy shiitake, I had tons of fungi to harvest. Before I could remove any shrooms from the logs I had to take some photos to mark the occasion. I crouched down on the ground and snapped this…

Holy Shiitake, Batman - I think it's ready to eat!

Holy Shiitake, Batman – I think it’s ready to eat!

I suppose most people would put down the camera and grab the butter and garlic, but not me. The sight of something round and smooth in the midst of the woods sent me off on a tangent. My right brain took over and I spent the next hour shooting round things. By the time I was finished it was dark and too late to harvest and sauté mushrooms. I had some Oreos and called it a night. What follows is my right-brained tangent – see if you can identify them all.

OK – so some of them were pretty obvious – this should be pretty simple. Whoever gets them all right first in the comments wins an 8X10 print of their favorite (or if you don’t like any of them you can pick something from another post)

You guess – I’m gonna sauté some shrooms.

Ready. Set. Go!

  1. Been out of town for a while, but being home with time to enjoy your pics makes me happy. Amazing timing, and talent of course, but timing is everything when shooting colors at either end of the day. I bet a lot of your neighbors drive the same road and non’t even notice the colors. But that is another post. Back to #7. It looks like a Cueball made into a gearshift knob, like they did in my youth:) If it isn’t that, is it a knob, or control, on a pinball or video game? Handle from a cigarette machine? I love the mhallenge you’ve given us, you’ll have to make it an annual event. Do you have walnuts in the Ozarks?

    • Hi Greg – good to hear from you. I think most of my neighbors are leaf paparazzi – we all love fall.

Bingo – it is a cue ball. It’s actually on a brass rod and is a starter for a muzzleloader, but I didn’t expect anyone to notice the rod – I was going for cue ball. Yes we do have walnuts in the Ozarks – black walnuts – you may be onto something 🙂

      • Call me crazy, but I still like to look back on this one once in a while ( and some of the other old ones too). Anyone guessed hickory nuts on #1? I can’t believe how those two were fighting over a crock pot. Maybe over a waffle iron, but a crock pot? I guess with winter coming a nice stew on a cold day sounded really good to them.

        • I’m glad you come back to visit. Hickory nuts is closer, but they are much smaller. A good sale often brings out the worst in holiday shoppers – I keep wondering what kind of stew an elk would eat.

          • Hello again, One last note before we leave cold, cold Ohio and head west to Portland, Or. to spend time with our family during the holidays. I’ve been thinking about the stew, maybe a nice vegetarian stew, but not spicy…. No on the hickory nuts, eh?… Do you have paw paws down there? People here talk about them as a treat, but we haven’t found any to try yet. There is even a paw paw festival in Ohio, but we spend too much time out of town to visit our kids, so we haven’t been to one yet and I still don’t know what they look or taste like. MerryChristmas to you and all your blog pals.

          • An alfalfa stew would probably be on the menu. We do have paw paws here but I have never tried them. Hickory nuts are not round in the husk – they are shaped more like footballs. I’m heading to Vegas myself shortly, away from this cold weather. Have a great time with your family. Merry Christmas to all the Crooks!

  3. So you shot some round things and then sauted some shrooms. So doing these two activities in unison, how did you make you feel? And as you think back, which were you more mindful of?

    • Thanks, I like to give myself random challenges. It helps me to be more intuitive about composition, and it’s kind of fun😊 Thanks for stopping by, I checked out some of your photography, very creative!

    • Woooohooo – so close! 20 out of 23! You take the lead!!

Thanks on 21 – it’s an honor to shoot the best shot of a dog in a swimming pool in Carroll County Arkansas.

    • Is that a mustang key fob? What the drain is to, I havent figured out yet. Salt shaker should have been more obvious to me if I considered that it isnt stainless. I have done a lot of mental walking tours of your house, the drain really stumps me. Looks like a rubber plug may have gone in the hole, but what do I know?Is 22 stone or Bakelite?

      • The Mustang is the horn button – you were the only one to get that one right! It’s hilarious – using loci to figure these out 🙂 The drain is the clean out covers from the porch – the hole is for you to put your finger in to open it. 22 is ceramic and you were correct the first time. You have everything except 1 and 7 – no one has gotten 1.

  7. From the 80’s, my fav song.. ” you spin me right round baby right round like a record baby right round round round ! ” great roundabout post!

  8. Wow Lorrie you don’t make things easy. Ha! But I’m stubborn (or stupid) and I’m going to try. I’m pretty sure I didn’t get them all right though. Sigh.

  9. Very funny, Lorri.
Is there an Australian version of this series of images – the US version is too hard – LOL.
